What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a condition usually described by chronic pain in the musculoskeletal system as well as having symptoms of general fatigue, sleeping difficulties, and a lack of mental/emotional wellbeing. This condition can seriously affect one's daily life, thus, our team is passionate about offering the best fibromyalgia treatment to our patients.

Headaches ranging from migraines to tension headaches as well as TMJ, IBS, and despondency/depression can accompany Fibromyalgia.  Fibromyalgia is diagnosed more in women than men and there is no known cure for this disease however there are many things that can be done to manage symptoms and express a great quality of life.

Most patients share common symptoms as well as physical or psychological traumatic events which seem to trigger Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is diagnosed mainly by patients meeting enough criteria to qualify them as having the condition.

The main criteria is pain for a minimum of 3 consecutive months in 4 out of 5 regions of the body.  These regions are the left upper quadrant, right upper quadrant, left lower quadrant, right lower quadrant, and the torso.

What Causes Fibromyalgia?

In the year 2022, one would think we would know more about this disease. However, little is known about the causes of Fibromyalgia.  It seems that there are factors that make one have a greater propensity to Fibromyalgia such as genetic, past medical history, past traumas, and family history.

Researchers agree that the main issue with Fibromyalgia is overactive C-nerve fibers (pain nerves) or over stimulated C-nerve fibers.  This overactive nerve relays signals to the brain that damage or trauma to the body is occurring.

Pain is the body’s natural response to let us know bad things are happening or are about to happen.  Pain is not a bad thing in that it tells us what is happening to our body and what we need to do to cause a positive change, but too much pain is a bad thing.

C-nerve fibers can be overactive or hypersensitive. Nerve fibers that are hypersensitive perceive pain quicker and with much less stimulation, so the brain perceives more pain than normal active C-nerve fibers.

How is Fibromyalgia Treated?

The treatment for fibromyalgia is a combination of pain relievers, antidepressants, anti-seizure medication, stress management, sleep aids, healthy lifestyles, and exercise.

As part of treatment, patients can seek the help of qualified Personal Trainers, Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, Massage Therapists, and Acupuncturists.

What are the Benefits of Seeing a Physical Therapist or a Chiropractor for Fibromyalgia Treatment?

Physical Therapy and Chiropractic Care seek to decrease inflammation in the body, normalize tone of the musculoskeletal system, increase strength and flexibility, increase normal nerve function, and improve overall quality of health.

Though Physical Therapists and Chiropractors may achieve these goals in a slightly different manner, both are great avenues to help patients with Fibromyalgia.
